Federal Style Leg Class

Furniture from the American Federal Period is known for the clean lines and delicate inlay that grace the surfaces of the work, a departure from the heavier look of the Queen Ann and Chippendale periods. Tables featured delicate tapered legs inlaid with stringing and banding and patterae or other ornamentation. In this class you will learn the techniques for inlaying the leg with stringing, banding, and bellflowers.
Much of this work will be accomplished with hand tools and a tool list will be provided.

Wood Finishing

Excellent wood finishing results can be obtained using just a few tools and materials. You'll learn the basic steps to get a fine finish, using varnish, shellac and oil on practice boards. You'll also learn which brush or pad to use, and how to add color with stains, glazes and waxes. This is a one day intensive course with time for discussion.

Furniture Refinishing and Restoration

Caring for antiques and fine furniture requires special attention to the finish. You'll learn about historical materials and techniaques, and how to recreate traditional finishes using today's shellac, varnish, wax and natural pigments. New, safer finish removers make refinishing more enhoyable, but we'll also show you how to revive finishes without stripping. Feel free to bring a small item to touch up, or a problem photo for class discussion. Practice materials will be provided. Ten students maximum.
